The Conclusion
The conclusion closes the loop the introduction opened, restating the thesis and leaving a final, memorable image. You'll learn the standard conclusion structure and how it sets up later lessons on significance and callback.
Restating and Reflecting
A strong conclusion briefly restates the thesis and the three areas covered, reminding the audience of the journey without simply repeating the preview verbatim. This restatement should feel like a satisfying summary, not a mechanical checklist.
Ending on Purpose
The very last lines should return to the AGD's imagery or scenario (a technique called the callback, covered in depth in Unit 9) so the speech feels like a complete circle rather than trailing off. Ending on a flat, generic line like 'thank you for listening' wastes the strongest emotional beat of the speech.
Closing the marine cloud brightening speech.
Restatement: 'So now you know how marine cloud brightening works, why scientists are pursuing it, and the risks that come with it.' Callback close: 'That fleet of ships spraying mist into the sky isn't science fiction anymore — it might be the fleet that keeps our climate, and our future, afloat.' This returns to the ship imagery from the AGD, closing the circle.
