Link, Thesis, and Preview
After the AGD hooks attention, three more pieces complete the introduction: the link connects the hook to the topic, the thesis states the core teaching claim, and the preview maps the three areas ahead. You'll learn to write all three tightly.
The Link
The link is a short transitional sentence or two that moves from the AGD's specific hook to the topic's broader subject, often naming the topic explicitly for the first time. Without a clear link, the AGD can feel disconnected from the rest of the speech, leaving the audience confused about what's actually being taught.
Thesis and Preview
The thesis is one clear sentence stating what the audience will understand by the end of the speech; the preview immediately follows, naming the three areas in the order they'll be covered. Together, these give the audience a mental map, which research on learning shows significantly improves retention of what follows.
Parallel Preview Language
Advanced speakers write their preview using parallel grammatical structure (three noun phrases, or three parallel questions) because parallelism is easier for an audience to remember and mirrors nicely when each area is introduced later using the same phrasing.
