Building a Rehearsal Schedule

Consistent, structured rehearsal in the weeks before a tournament builds the fluency that lets a speaker perform confidently under pressure. You'll learn how to structure a rehearsal calendar leading into competition.

Phases of Rehearsal

Early rehearsal weeks focus on solidifying memorization and basic blocking; middle weeks focus on refining delivery, vocal variety, and aid handling; the final week before competition focuses on full run-throughs under realistic, pressure-simulating conditions. Trying to do all three at once, especially close to a tournament, usually produces worse results than sequencing them.

Simulating Competition Conditions

In the final rehearsal phase, practice in unfamiliar rooms, in front of unfamiliar audiences, and with the exact same aid and clothing planned for competition, since first performing under those exact conditions in the actual round adds unnecessary risk. A mock tournament round with a peer or coach acting as judge, including a written ballot, closely simulates the real pressure and feedback structure.

Fatigue-Conditioned Rehearsal

In the final rehearsal phase, some advanced competitors deliberately practice their speech after a long, tiring day rather than only when fresh, since tournament days involve running multiple events and long waits, and a speech that only performs well when the speaker is fully rested may falter under real tournament fatigue.

Worked example

A speaker builds a six-week rehearsal calendar before a major tournament.

Weeks one and two: drilling memorization and basic blocking transitions in isolation. Weeks three and four: full run-throughs focused on vocal variety, humor timing, and aid reveals, with weekly coach feedback. Weeks five and six: full mock rounds in unfamiliar rooms with a written ballot from a peer judge each time, plus one full run-through wearing her actual competition outfit to rule out any wardrobe surprises.

Quick Check
  1. 1. What should early rehearsal weeks generally focus on?

  2. 2. True or False?

"It's advisable to first perform a speech in an unfamiliar room and outfit during the actual competition round rather than in rehearsal."

  3. 3. Why might a competitor deliberately rehearse their speech while already tired?

Answer all 3 to check.

Takeaway

Sequence rehearsal from memorization and blocking, to delivery refinement, to full pressure-simulating mock rounds in the final week.
