The Why-Should-I-Care Filter

Every topic must survive one blunt question before it goes further: why should this specific audience, in this room, care? This lesson gives you a concrete filter to apply.

Applying the Filter Early

Before researching deeply, write one sentence answering 'this matters to you because...' If you cannot finish that sentence honestly and specifically, the topic needs a different angle or should be dropped. Vague answers like 'it's interesting' or 'it's important' are a warning sign that the relevance hasn't been found yet.

Angling a Topic Toward Relevance

Sometimes a topic itself is fine but needs a sharper angle — 'the history of anesthesia' is generic, but 'why you might remember your surgery when you shouldn't' is a sharper, more personal angle on the same subject matter. Angling early saves you from rewriting the whole speech later.

Testing the Filter on Real People

Before fully committing, strong competitors test their one-sentence relevance pitch on a few non-debate friends or family members and watch their genuine reaction — a blank stare or polite nod is a signal the angle needs sharpening, while a genuine follow-up question is a strong sign the angle works.

Worked example

A speaker starts with the broad idea 'coral reefs.'

Her first relevance sentence is 'this matters because coral reefs are important for the ocean' — too vague. She revises: 'this matters because the compound in your sunscreen might be quietly killing the reefs that support a quarter of all marine life.' The second version personalizes the stakes and gives her thesis a sharper direction before she's written anything else.

Quick Check
  1. 1. What is a warning sign that a topic's relevance hasn't been found yet?

  2. 2. What does 'angling' a topic mean in this context?

  3. 3. Why is testing a relevance pitch on non-debate people valuable?

Answer all 3 to check.

Takeaway

If you can't finish 'this matters to you because...' specifically, the topic isn't ready yet.
