How to Start a Speech and Debate Club

Starting a debate club at your school is easier than it looks. Here is a step-by-step guide for students and coaches.

Find your people

You need at least three committed students and one adult sponsor. The sponsor does not need to be a debate expert — they just need to be organized, supportive, and willing to learn with you.

Pick your first events

Start with events that have low barriers. Congress and Impromptu require no partner and little prep. Public Forum is great for pairs. Avoid Policy and LD until you have experienced members or a coach.

Set a practice schedule

Meet once a week for skill-building and once more for practice rounds. Use the first month to teach speaking basics: eye contact, structure, and how to answer a question directly.

Find tournaments

Look for local NSDA-sanctioned tournaments, school-hosted invitationals, and online tournaments. Many tournaments offer novice divisions specifically for new schools.

Use free resources

You do not need a big budget. Use free curriculum, printable ballots and flow sheets, and online drills. Assign students to teach each other after completing lessons.

Key takeaway

A debate club starts with three committed students, one supportive adult, and a regular practice time. Everything else can be built as you grow.

Club Launch Checklist

Find 3+ students. Recruit an adult sponsor. Pick 2-3 starter events. Set a weekly practice time. Register with your district/state association. Find one novice tournament. Use free curriculum and printables.
