Pre-Round Routine and the Prep Box

A consistent pre-round routine reduces wasted time and nerves on tournament morning, and a well-stocked prep box means you're never caught without something you need. By the end of this lesson you'll be able to build both.

A repeatable pre-round routine

Arrive early enough to check the room assignment and docket order, do a 2-minute review of your top prep sheets for bills likely to come up, and run through your breathing technique from Unit 8 before the session starts. Repeating the same routine every round reduces decision fatigue and nerves because the process itself becomes automatic.

What goes in the prep box

A solid prep box includes: your prep sheets for the day's docket, blank note cards for new blocks, extra pens/highlighters, a printed or accessible copy of chamber rules of procedure, a watch or timer (some rooms lack visible clocks), water, and a quick snack for long sessions. Missing even one of these mid-round is a distraction you don't need.

Digital vs. paper backups

If your tournament allows laptops or tablets for prep, keep a paper backup of your most important prep sheets anyway — dead batteries and wifi issues happen, and you don't want your best bill's prep to disappear right before you're recognized.

Pro move: a rolling 'top 3' folder

Rather than digging through every prep sheet for the day's docket, keep a rotating folder of just your top 3 most-likely-to-come-up bills at the front of your prep box, updated each session based on what's actually been debated. This shaves precious seconds off the moment between being recognized and having the right sheet in hand.

Worked example

You arrive at your assigned chamber room 20 minutes before the session starts.

You check the docket order posted at the door, note that bills 3 and 7 (your strong-pile bills) are near the top. You do a 2-minute silent review of both prep sheets, sip some water, and do 4 slow breaths before finding your seat. When the gavel comes down to open the session, you're already settled rather than still digging through your bag.

Quick Check
  1. 1. Why is a consistent, repeatable pre-round routine valuable?

  2. 2. True or False?

"If a tournament allows laptop-based prep, it's unnecessary to keep any paper backup of your key materials."

Answer all 2 to check.

Takeaway

Build a repeatable pre-round routine and a well-stocked, backed-up prep box so tournament-day logistics never cost you focus.
