Beyond choosing between empirical and philosophical frameworks, debaters need general weighing mechanisms to tell a judge why their case matters more overall. You will be able to use magnitude, probability, and framework weighing in a single speech.
Magnitude and Probability
Magnitude weighing argues your impact is simply bigger or more significant than the opponent's; probability weighing argues your case, even if its impact is smaller, is much more likely to be true given the strength of your warrants and evidence. A well-weighed speech often combines both: 'Even if their impact were larger, ours is far more probable given the quality of our sourcing, and probability discounted by near-certainty still outweighs a speculative, larger claim.'
Framework Weighing as the Final Layer
Framework weighing steps back and argues which overall lens the judge should use to evaluate the whole round — for instance, arguing the judge should prioritize logical consistency over intuitive plausibility, or vice versa. This is often the most powerful weighing tool in a close BQ round because it can resolve a debate even when both sides have made reasonably strong individual arguments.
Pre-Framing Weighing Before It's Needed
Introduce your preferred weighing mechanism (e.g., 'prioritize probability over raw magnitude') as early as your constructive, not just in the final speech, so the judge has been primed to apply your lens throughout the entire round rather than hearing it for the first time at the end.

'Even if you think my opponent's cultural relativism examples are true, they only show people disagree about morality — they don't show there's no truth to disagree about. Weigh probability: our account, that disagreement reflects imperfect access to a real truth, is a far more probable explanation than their account, that morality is nothing at all, because it doesn't require us to abandon our own strongest moral convictions, like that torturing children for fun is truly wrong, not just unpopular in some places.'
