A BQ debater should sound like a thoughtful person sharing a genuine conclusion, not a lawyer trying to trick the judge; steady eye contact, a calm tone even under cross-examination pressure, and honest acknowledgment of a genuinely tough objection ('that's a fair point, and here's why I think we still win') build more credibility than bluster or dismissiveness.
Handling Being Wrong Gracefully
If cross-examination exposes a real flaw in your case, conceding a minor point gracefully and pivoting to your stronger arguments reads as intellectually honest, while stubbornly denying an obvious flaw reads as evasive and can cost you credibility on your entire case, not just that one point.
Matching Tone to the Resolution's Gravity
For resolutions with real emotional weight, like ones involving suffering, death, or moral atrocity, calibrate your tone to take the subject seriously without becoming theatrical; a judge trusts a debater who treats a heavy topic with appropriate gravity over one who treats it as a purely academic game.
