Many BQ resolutions require engaging peer-reviewed science, from neuroscience to physics to biology. You will be able to locate a relevant study and correctly summarize what it does and does not show.
Databases and Search Strategy
Google Scholar, PubMed, and arXiv let you search by keyword and filter by date and citation count, which helps you find both foundational studies and the most recent scholarship. Search using the specific scientific term for your concept (e.g., 'neural correlates of consciousness') rather than the philosophical phrasing of the resolution.
What a Study Actually Shows
Read the methods section to understand what was actually measured and the discussion section to see what the authors themselves believe the results support — authors are often far more cautious than the way their study gets cited by others. A study showing correlation between brain activity and a decision does not by itself prove that brain activity causes or is identical to the decision; that further philosophical step needs its own argument.
A debater wants to use Libet's famous experiments on the timing of brain activity before conscious decisions.
Reading the original study's discussion section (not just secondhand summaries), the debater discovers Libet himself argued there is still room for conscious 'veto power' over an initiated action. This nuance lets the Affirmative use the same study the Negative cites, arguing it actually supports a limited form of free will rather than refuting it entirely.
