Tone and Credibility
How you sound matters almost as much as what you say to a lay judge evaluating credibility. You will be able to describe delivery habits that build versus undermine credibility.
Confidence Without Arrogance
A calm, confident tone reads as credible, while a hostile, sarcastic, or condescending tone toward opponents — even if the arguments are correct — often costs points with lay judges who value civility. Aggression during Crossfire in particular can backfire, since judges frequently note 'rudeness' as something that lowers their impression of a team.
Physical and Vocal Delivery
Eye contact with the judge (not just reading off a page), varied vocal tone instead of a monotone recitation, and standing with confident, still posture all reinforce that the debater actually believes and understands their arguments. Fidgeting, reading in a flat monotone, or refusing to make eye contact can undercut even a well-written speech.
Reading the Room Mid-Round
Experienced debaters watch the judge's body language during their own speech — a confused frown after a fast section is a cue to slow down and re-explain; a judge who stops writing may need a clearer signpost. This live feedback loop, adjusting delivery in real time based on visible judge reactions, separates polished competitors from those who deliver the same way regardless of audience response.

Debater A reads flatly from a page without looking up, mumbling through the final line. Debater B delivers the same content with eye contact toward the judge, a clear and measured pace, and a confident pause before the final weighing line. Judges frequently reward Debater B's delivery even when the underlying arguments are comparably strong.
