Line-by-Line Refutation
Rebuttal is where you directly attack the other team's Constructive, argument by argument, rather than giving a vague general response. You will be able to organize a line-by-line rebuttal against an opposing contention.
What 'Line-by-Line' Means
Line-by-line means addressing the other team's arguments in the order they were presented, contention by contention, rather than jumping around or responding only in general terms. This makes it easy for the judge to follow on their flow, matching each response directly under the argument it answers.
The Three Response Types
For each opposing argument, a debater can attack the warrant (it isn't actually true or the logic doesn't hold), attack the impact (even if true, it doesn't matter as much as claimed), or attack the link (the claimed cause doesn't actually connect to the claimed effect). Strong Rebuttals often use more than one response type against the same argument for redundancy.
Con is rebutting Pro's contention that a policy 'creates 500,000 jobs.'
Con's line-by-line: 'On their jobs contention: First, the warrant is flawed — their own source admits the jobs number is a projection, not a measured outcome. Second, even granting the number, the impact is overstated: most of these are short-term construction jobs lasting under two years, not the lasting economic transformation Pro claims.' Notice Con attacks both the warrant and the impact separately.
