Parli judges are typically asked to be tabula rasa, meaning blank slate, evaluating only what happens in the round rather than their own outside opinions on the topic. You will be able to explain what tabula rasa means for how you should debate and how a ballot decision gets made.
What tabula rasa means
A tabula rasa judge sets aside personal beliefs about the motion and votes based on which team did the better debating: who won more arguments, who weighed better, who told the more complete story by the end of the round. This means a debater can win arguing a position they personally disagree with, as long as they out-argue the other team.
How the ballot decision works
At the end of the round, the judge reviews their flow — a speech-by-speech note of every argument — and decides which team's overall case survived best. Judges typically look for which side won the most important clash points, not simply who made the most arguments, since one dropped but crucial argument can outweigh five minor ones.
Speaker points versus win-loss
Separate from who wins the round, judges assign speaker points to each of the four debaters based on their individual clarity, strategy, and persuasiveness. A debater can lose the round but still earn high speaker points for excellent individual speaking, which matters for tournament speaker awards and tiebreakers.
Writing the ballot for the judge
Advanced debaters treat their final rebuttal as if they were writing the judge's ballot for them, using language like 'even if you buy their argument, here's why it doesn't matter' or 'this is the argument that decides the round.' This technique, sometimes called 'giving the judge the RFD (reason for decision)' in advance, dramatically increases win rates because it does the judge's weighing work for them instead of leaving it to chance.

The judge's flow shows Government won the psychological harm argument cleanly, but Opposition successfully proved Government's alternative (therapeutic housing) was never explained with enough detail to be a workable model. In the final rebuttals, Opposition explicitly told the judge: 'even if solitary is bad, an untested alternative isn't a reason to vote Government.' Because Government never answered that comparative point, the judge votes Opposition, noting on the ballot: 'OPP wins because GOV's model was never fleshed out, and OPP's risk-of-the-unknown argument went unanswered.'
