Reading broadly, not deeply
Rather than becoming an expert in one narrow topic, effective Parli prep means skimming headlines across politics, economics, science, and culture every day, building a wide net of facts, names, and mechanisms you can pull from in twenty minutes. A five-minute daily habit of reading a reputable news digest compounds into a genuinely broad knowledge base over a season.
Building a mental case bank
As you read, mentally tag stories with a debate mechanism they illustrate — a story about a corporate bailout teaches 'moral hazard,' a story about a failed regime change teaches 'unintended consequences of intervention.' These reusable mechanisms transfer across dozens of different motions even when the specific topic is new.
Practicing motion drills
Set a timer for five minutes and practice building a full case skeleton — definition, three tags, one impact each — from a randomly picked past motion, without looking anything up. Doing this two or three times a week builds the exact muscle you need on tournament day, when the clock is real and the motion is unfamiliar.
