Once a question is chosen, the middle of prep is spent pulling sources and building a physical outline that will guide both writing and delivery. You will be able to build a full three-point outline in about fifteen minutes.
Pulling Sources With a Plan
Rather than rereading every article in a folder, a competitor should go in already guessing the shape of three points from the ten-second gut check, then pull two or three sources to confirm and add specificity to each guessed point. This targeted approach avoids the common trap of rereading an entire folder and running out of time before outlining even begins.
The Physical Outline
A standard prep outline is written on a single sheet or notecard and includes, in shorthand, the AGD topic, the thesis, three point headers each with one source name, one statistic, and one impact word, and a one-line conclusion callback reminder. Keeping the outline to a single page forces brevity and ensures a competitor can glance at it quickly while speaking rather than flipping through pages.
Pre-Formatted Outline Templates
Many competitors pre-print or pre-draw a blank outline template with labeled blanks for AGD, thesis, preview, and each point's source-statistic-impact before the round even starts, so during prep they are only filling blanks rather than designing the outline's layout from scratch, saving crucial seconds.
A competitor has fifteen minutes left after choosing her Taiwan-China question and pulling three sources.
