Pre-Round Routine

A consistent pre-round routine reduces nerves and ensures nothing important is forgotten before a round begins. You will be able to design a personal pre-round checklist.

Logistics Checklist

Before every round, confirm the room number and side assignment, check the judge's paradigm if available, make sure all files and evidence are organized and accessible, and confirm your timer works — small logistical failures cause outsized stress right before a round starts.

Mental Warm-Up

Spend a few quiet minutes reviewing your strongest contention's key line and your best answer to the most common opposing argument, rather than cramming new material; a calm, rehearsed opening reduces early-round nerves and sets a confident tone for the rest of the debate.

Worked example

Ten minutes before a round on 'Resolved: Free will exists.'

The debater checks Tabroom for the room and judge, confirms the judge's paradigm says 'lay judge, be clear,' silently rereads their moral responsibility contention's tag line and pre-emption one time, checks that their timer app is charged, and takes two deep breaths before walking into the room, arriving with time to spare rather than rushing in at the last second.

Quick Check
  1. 1. What is a recommended use of the last few minutes before a round?

Answer all 1 to check.

Takeaway

Build a consistent pre-round checklist covering logistics and a calm mental warm-up on your strongest, already-practiced material.
